Doors Open Milwaukee

September 23, 2012
Hmm; it's Sept 2013 and this is finally getting posted!

This is an awesome event...check it out.

"...open the doors to 125 wonderful buildings free-of-charge to the public –buildings that hold hidden treasures and special stories – from churches to office buildings, theaters to work sites, museums to hotels, clubs to universities; all sites of historic, architectural, cultural, or commercial interest."

Pabst Brewery

Yes, it's been awhile since there have been tours!

Stained glass windows abound!

Statue of Captain Fredrick Pabst

“President’s Office” that was once Captain Frederick Pabst’s Office and...a rolltop desk identified by Augie Pabst as my, “Grandfather’s old rolltop desk.”

Built in 1877, the brewhouse at the Pabst Brewing complex is being converted into the 90 room Brewhouse Inn & Suites.

Constructed of classic cream city brick, buildings 20 and 21 will retain many of their distinctive features, including the six brew kettles and historic entry staircase.

MSOE Grohmann Museum

MSOE’s Man at Work Collection has more than 800 paintings and sculptures dating from 1580 to the present. They reflect a variety of artistic styles and subjects that document the evolution of organized work.  The Grohmann Museum welcomes visitors to three floors of galleries and also features a spectacular rooftop sculpture garden.

Look up...

...or look down,
it's an impressive stairwell either way!

When it's a nice day outside, and you spend time on the rooftop garden, it's easy to forget that there are cool exhibits inside too...

The Denis Sullivan
(No, it's not a pirate ship)

The S/V Denis Sullivan was completed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2000 by professional shipwrights and nearly 1,000 volunteers. Annually the S/V Denis Sullivan travels over 18,000 nautical miles a year from her summer home at Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin, along the east coast to her winter home in Southern Florida.

When it's time to learn the ropes, there's a lot of ropes to learn.

Cranberry vines/plants.
No; the berries don't grow underwater.

Bogs flooded, berries removed from vines, and ready to gather

They float because each berry has four air pockets
